I suggest posting in the W210 forum as the 96 model year is a W210 chassis code. I don't now if anyone here owns a '96, but I'm sure you'll be happy with any Mercedes diesel - their engines are really robust as are most diesels to handle the high compression pressure, and coupled with the oiliness of diesel, leads to extremely long engine life.

One caution:
Beware of the 350D motors from the early '90s (in-line 6 cyl.) -- they bend their connecting rods. Mercedes had to do a major extended warranty and/or recall on those and not everyone is satisfied that the revised long blocks installed during the extended warranty services were completely successful in curing the problem.

350d engine does not exist in w 210 chassis...300d or td is one of the best mercedes engines ever build and with proper care can last forever...I have seen few of them reaching million kilometers without any major engine fault...
