E320 Climate control
What is the function of the blue colored thumwheel in the center of the dash between the center air vents (#7)? The manual states that this thumwheel is for adding cold air. Nothing else is listed. Frankly, I don't see a difference.

When you are in "manual mode"--meaning one of the override buttons with the circular patterns on the switches, which select airflow from specific outlets--the blue wheel lets "untempered" outside air through the center outlet. Primarily, it's for cold outside air at the face in winter when heat is in use. It controls the opening of a valve electrically, so it's not an instant reaction when you open it. I could detect its effect last winter. In the summer, I presume it would just let in humid outside air when in manual mode.

Thanks. How should it react in the "auto" AC mode? There's no difference in air flow to (4) or other vents.

In Winter, it's useful as you can control how much cold air comes in the central vents, which means you can have reasonably cold air blowing at your face whilst the rest of you and the car is kept warm depending on the temp on the climate control.
On long drives, it prevents the air from getting too stuffy and I guess the cooler air blowing on your face helps to keep you awake whilst keeping your feet toasty warm

konigstiger: The book says the blue wheel only works in manual modes, and my experience confirms that. No effect in Auto. Since the actuator is electronic, it may simply not be energized in Auto.
