Aircon on - idle speed drops??

Aircon on - idle speed drops??
Hi all,
I have been noticing this for a while now, when I put the aircon/climate control on, my idle speed drops from the normal 750RPM to 600 or a tad below that.
I know the AC compressor bearing is on its way out, but at this low idle, the moaning and whining noises are getting simply unbearable and very annoying. At the lights, I need to pop her into Neutral so that the revs climb a bit to 750 again where the moaning stops or at least is subdued.
What could be wrong here please?

Sounds like a very simple case, assuming your diagnosis is correct----either live with the noise or change the compressor.
