new 5mph bumper test...look at how the new E scored

http://money.cnn.com/2003/09/08/pf/a...ex.htm?cnn=yes

"DETROIT (Reuters) - Five of six new vehicles scored "poor" or "marginal" ratings in low-speed crash tests measuring the damage from bumping into barriers at 5 miles per hour, according to a study released on Sunday.

The Infiniti G35 luxury car from Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. sustained the most damage, an average of $1,481 in each of four crash tests on the front and rear bumpers to simulate common mishaps in commuter traffic and parking lots.

The tests were conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an auto safety research group funded by the insurance industry.

"The G35's bumpers are a disaster," Adrian Lund, chief operating officer for the institute, said in a release. In one test backing the luxury car into a pole, "there was extensive damage to body panels, including a crushed trunk lid and floor pan," Lund said.

In addition to the G35, the Mercedes E Class luxury sedan and the Nissan Quest minivan also scored "poor" ratings. The Toyota Sienna minivan and the Saab 9-3 car both received "marginal" ratings. Only the Mazda6 sedan performed reasonably well, earning an "acceptable" rating with an average of $342 in each of the four crashes.

The new Saab 9-3, Nissan Quest and Toyota Sienna all sustained more damage than the previous models they replaced. The Quest recorded the biggest jump in damage, to an average of $1,137 per crash test, up from $366 previously, which earned it a "good" rating.

The Mazda6 did better because its bumpers were designed to absorb energy and keep it away from the body, the institute said.

The institute conducts the tests and publicizes the results to pressure automakers into making stronger bumpers."

Just posting this because I have nothing better to do right now. Here's the bumper test data for the 2003 E500 from the IIHS website:

Front into flat barrier: $691
Rear into flat barrier: $586
Front into angle barrier: $978
Rear into pole: $2,944
Total damage: $5,199
4 tests Average damage per test: $1,300

I guess Parktronic is worth the $1035. And even though the E performed poorly in low speed tests, at least you know you have a good chance of walking out of a high speed crash.

who parks at 5MPH? 5MPH is pretty fast for parking, or backing up into poles. where are all these poles that stick up waiting for people to back into them anyway, I don't see any where I travel.

Come down to Los Angeles. People there park really quick in lots of areas. If you head down to the Alhambra/Monterey Park/San Gabriel or Roland Heights areas, you'll see why having a bumper that can w/stand a 5 mph bump w/out much damage is real important. People there can't drive worth $h!*

You would think after all these years the auto companies would figure out how to build decent bumpers and be done with it.

Naw, that makes too much sense.

Actually, I recall watching one of those news programs that talked about crash testing and they showed how simply putting a thick piece of foam behind the bumper helped a lot w/ how much damage was caused. But, some car companies are so cheap, they only put small sections of foam where they thought the testing apparatus would hit the bumper. They found a huge cost or repair difference in the places protected by the foam and the places without, all easily solved by putting a piece of foam all the way around the inside of the bumper.
