considering buying 2004 E320 wagon - feedback?

Hello, We need a car with 3rd row seating and aren't huge fans of SUVs or minivans, so started looking for an older (ie affordable) mercedes wagon. I found a 2004 E320 wagon with 67K miles at a good price. I'm wondering if anyone has a similar car and what are the good/bad points we should take into consideration.

My parents had a series of Mercedes wagons when I was a kid, so I have ridden in the 3rd row seat many times. My impression is that these wagons are very safely constructed and 2004 isn't THAT old. My father says that we should be wary of maintenance and repair costs, which add up very quickly with Mercedes. How much work do you think I should expect a car like this to require?

The dealer selling it isn't a Benz dealer, and he said that there is no bluetooth hands-free phone system or navigation system installed (though there are buttons for them on the dash and steering wheel in the photos). I'm wondering how hard it is to upgrade. I see that MB offers the "V-60 BT" kit for this car - does this work for every E320 model? And the dealer said I could probably buy a navigation system but it would cost around $3000 - $4000. Is there another way? And finally, would it be possible to configure it so that I can play music from an MP3 player?

Thanks!!!

Ha! well I don't necessarily NEED those things, I'm wondering whether they are possible, so that I know what to expect. I'm way more concerned about the cost of maintenance.

Probably too late for this response, but I own a 2004 E320 Wagon. I didn't really start getting major (pricey) problems until this year. Dealer said my car is airmatic. It's in the shop now because of sinking problem. Dealer said it will cost $1600 to replace (rear left and right) airbag in the suspension (because it's leaking), and I also need to replace (rear left and right) shocks for $1100. The airmatic cars seem to have a sinking problem (meaning the car falls too close to the tires). So, unless you're ready to dump a lot of money to get an old car fixed, the Wagon is a good family car. If you dont mind my asking, how much was the car? I'm thinking of selling mine.

20147, your problem was going to the dealer to get those parts replaced. Arnott sells Airmatic components for fraction of the cost you were charged by the dealer.

I have E500 Wagon with over 155,000 miles and it's been rock solid. I do all of the work myself, so no labor cost. You have to shop for parts. My local dealer inflates prices by a good margin. They wanted $141 for the center speaker. I found a dealer in NC that sells OEM parts online and I bought it for $80 or so. My advice is to go for a V8 as they are built to last. Also, try to find a 5-speed instead of 7-speed transmission.
