replace GPS screen with modern touch screen?

Hi, I have a 2004 e320 4matic wagon. I was just wondering if it's possible to replace the existing GPS screen/system with a touch screen system (like in newer cars)? Can this be done easily? Any idea of the cost?

Thanks!

Dynavin was a choice as I recall. You lose steering wheel function though.

From looking at the website, "www.dynavin.com", it looks like you still have your steering wheel controls.

I understand what it says, unfortunately the reviews I read from those who installed it - shows only the European versions keep steering wheel controls - the US version loses it. It's been a while, so I will look for where I saw it, and post it up here.

Regardless...the unit is pretty cool.

EDIT: Here is the thread I read way back when....

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...-mbe-most.html

Shows a few posts in that Dynavin states the product does not work with US models.

There are other units out there besides the Dynavin. I've heard nothing but good things about the Dynavin. I purchased a similar version or a Dynavin clone from Enco for my BMW. It works well, a little buggy at times but I was able to retain the steering wheel controls & the Install was very easy.

I considered doing this for my Mercedes. However the install is not as easy on the W211. It get's more difficult if you have the fiber/logic system. It's doable, but very time consuming.

Here is an e-bay link for the Dynavin unit for my E-500. According to the dealer, you will retain your steering wheel controls. May try this one, fingers crossed.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DYNAVIN-D99-IN-DASH-GPS-NAVIGATION-RADIO-FOR-02-08-MERCEDES-BENZ-E-CLASS-W211-/160854571798?pt=Car_Audio_Video&hash=item2573adfb16&vxp=mtr
May have to cut and paste the link, I'm not the most technologically brilliant person.

So you know...there is an actual dealer here in the US and the price is cheaper than on Ebay.

Could you explain why? Every review I have read said the amps would stay without issue...but the steering wheel controls didn't work. I would love to find a new head unit but haven't found something plug and play as of yet.

Ive been reading in and watching an assortment of euro and US w211 videos and The steering wheel function remains on all (from what I've seen). I did heard about the original version horror stories of no steering wheel control and as far as the HK systems go I believe you would need to get Dynavin MOST. I would just ask the shop before purchase and don't buy blind off eBay unless you know for sure or the seller gives you assurance and possible return if it doesn't work.

I have seen posts where it does, and does not work. Also seen sellers saying the steering wheel controls will not work unless it is the "base" system, and will not work with fiber optic system. Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between base and an upgraded system, and what does the fiber optic system mean? For example, I have the am/fm/cd with in dash 6 disc changer, and nav. Is this the upgraded system, with fiber optics?
Thank you

Because the amps are hooked up via fiber cables and Dynavin has no adapter for it.

This is copy/paste from it's description on newegg from the link by bigbudha

This unit is intended to be direct plug and play for 2002-2008 Mercedes Benz W211 E320 E350 E500 as long as your car does not have factory navigation or premium sound/fiber optics. If you have fiber optics you will need to bypass this during installation (meaning you have to get new amps). This radio is intended to upgrade base/factory model vehicle only.

Hello All, kurtismayfield is absolutely correct. Here's an email that I sent to Dynavin:

Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2013 10:18 PM
To: info@dynavin.com
Subject: DVN-MBE-MOST

Hello,

I have a 2006 Mercedes CLS55 AMG with the factory Harmon Kardon Logic 7 Surround System (Single CD, 6 Disc CD Changer and DVD COMAND Navigation). It does utilize fiber optic cable.

I'm interested in purchasing the Dynavin DVN-MBE-MOST 7" Touch Screen LCD Multimedia Navigation System. I need to know if this system is 100% compatible with mine (I did read the information provided on the website but need to be sure). Is this system a plug and play unit or will I require additional equipment? I do want to maintain my steering wheel COMAND functionality. Also, does this system support DVD's (video playback)?

Please help. Any information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi,

The MOST units in our experience do not work consistently in US spec cars so we stopped selling them. We do sell the non-MOST versions. In order install the unit you would also have to replace the amplifier since it is fiber optic. A conventional aftermarket amp will work for this, It would be a good idea to consult with a good stereo shop about this, its a fairly common situation any time a shop installs a new head unit in a Mercedes (all E and CLS cars have this situation).
