2006 cdi aux battery

just dropped 950 on service with 300 of that in parts - still reeling.
was told need aux battery and quoted 300 - I said NO THANKS.
I am guessing that my key batteries are going down after only 4-5 weeks because of the 2ndry battery not working properly - can anyone comment on this?
suggestions on replacing the battery?
thanks in advance.

I just had my cdi serviced about a month ago and the bill was approximately $900 and they also said that the auxiliary battery was bad. I did not have any warning lights. Lucky, I had purchased one from ebay about two months ago as I could not has passed up on the price (approx $38), and I knew that my battery was well over six years old (the date on the battery was March, 2006). The new battery shipped dry, so I was not in a rush to install it. I have had the old battery sitting on my workbench and the voltage will be in a range from 10.3 to 11.3 volts.
Changing it is not too bad of a job. The hardest part is bending the tabs that hold the bolts to the cable. Also, I took a piece of cardboard and placed it under the nut on the new battery to easily install the bolt. The cardboard holds the nut up against the battery post. The original battery bolts actually thread into the batteries post, where the non-MB replacement battery has a nut and bolt.
