E500 Wagon
05 E500 4matic wagon?

I found an 05 E500 wagon with around 20K miles. The owner has not driven the wagon for some time. Want to get a little insight on things to be aware of for this model. I am planning to have a Mercedes shop inspect the car. More of my question is about the 4matic. What options could this car could have come with besides a wood steering wheel and heated seats? I have very little dealings with them. Any input and suggestion(s) would be great.

Also what sort of mileage might I get out of the wagon? I have an E320 wagon already. I see 26-28 at 75mph on my drives.

Thanks

Car free at the moment
The engine, transmission, and 4matic system should be solid on this car. It uses the well proven M113 V8 and 722.6 5-speed automatic. The main area to be aware is the airmatic suspension system. This car uses air struts at all four corners rather than steel springs. The air struts do occasionally fail and can be expensive to replace; be sure you are comfortable with the potential costs.

The E500 came with quite a bit of standard equipment - most stuff is likely standard. Options would include satellite radio, CD changer, HID headlights, multi-contour or drive dynamic seats, ventilated seats, parking sensors, and the radar based cruise control (forget it's marketing name).

Expect perhaps 16MPG city and 21-22HWY. The big engine and 4matic system are much less efficient than the V6.

The car has the window sticker. I was read what was on the car and one package puzzles me. It say #426 package. The says heated seats and power lift gate. Any idea what 426 stands for?

I don't know what is option 426, I don't have it, but someone should chime in on that. Being 05, 20k doesn't play any role in a decision really. The car was parked for years, that means the seals and fluids need to be changed. The only benefit I can see of buying something that old with that low mileage is the condition of interior and exterior (if it was parked in a garage). The worst thing you can do to your car is let it stand for years.

As far as MPGs go, expect it to be bad in the city, between 14 and 16. The best I got on a 300mile trip was a tad under 25mpg with cruise control set at 70mph 95% of the time. The car is certified as Ultra Low Emession Vehicle though.

Thanks konigstiger

I looked at the brochure

All items in Sunroof Package and Entertainment Package. Drive-Dynamic front seats with dynamic multicontour seatbacks. COMAND-DVD navigation system4

Understand most all of it. They call having a sunroof, seat dynamics and COMAND-DVD as Entertainment?

Again Thank you all for helping me out

I bought my '04 3 years ago, it also had but 20,000 miles. It had every option except for sat. radio. The headlights are amazing, the dynamic seat is silly, and the nav. is so far out of date that I never use it. Good luck,

Bought my '04 E500 wagon with 91K on it 2.5 years ago; has 124K now. I tow a utility trailer (1500 lbs typical) with it weekly. Had to replace the airmatic pump ($800 at an independent shop) and had to replace the battery control module ($800 at dealer). Both those items are known defects with service bulletins dating from 2005. Plan on replacing both batteries if yours are original; you can find the ATV battery used for the SBC module on Amazon for about $80 (dealer may want over $200) and you can replace it in a few minutes yourself. Other than that, just tires and brakes and flushing the brake fluid that can be expensive due to the need to flush the SBC module. With the factory-recommended Conti ProContacts you'll get 21MPG on the highway and about 17 MPG around town; my winter tires are Michelin Alpin PA3's that add 1-2 MPG to the preceeding but give a stiff ride and don't seem to have much more traction in snow than the Conti's; I don't recommend them; I have run Blizzaks on my other M-B's and they are superior. As for the COMAND system, the GPS is outdated technology and any $100 GPS will do you better. The IPOD jack hidden in the glovebox is a plus. The Dynamic seats are gimmicky but the pulsating lumbar support has some advantages; its disadvantage is that it shuts off after a few minutes due to a built-in timer so you have to keep turning it back on during a long trip. Only thing I don't like about the car is the stupid menu for the various service intervals (there are a handful of them) that are challenging to program and probably unnecessary; the old A & B service intervals worked just fine, thank you.
