2005-2009 CDI question

Hello,
I had a 97 E300D. I owned it for 8 years until my wife had a very minor crash, and the insurance wanted to total it. They cut me a check for 7800.
I fixed all the grimlens myself using the user groups.

Now I am looking at stepping up to a W211.
I just drove a 2005 CDI with 100k on the clock. It was in very nice shape.
I also see a 2009 with the Bluetec componets, with half the miles but 10k more for the car.
What is the Engine differences between the 05-06, the 07 and 09?
Any reliablity issues between the lot?
Does the 05 have the whirle motor beneath the manifold that goes out?

I know the 05 has the dreaded SBC system. It looks like its a brand new unit. Does the new unit fix the problem, or does it show up again later?

I loved the test ride but I am a bit gun shy on the SBC.

How long do the glow plugs last on the 05-06? I see that people are getting them stuck.
On my 97 they were changed at 50k just before I bought it. I changed them at round 2 at 140k. I printed out ten pages from the users group dreading getting one stuck. I was lucky and they came out like butter.

Does the 05 have the ****ty leaking fuel o-rings - or the jerky or sticky manifold flaps like the 97?

Thanks for any feed back.

Bill

The 05/06 models come equipped with the OM648 inline 6 cylinder. This motor is pretty much bullet proof. Torque is instantaneous and smooth. Occasionally, there are glow plug failures, but not much more than that. I would deal with SBC and go for the solid drive train.

The 07+ OM642 V6 is a whole other animal. It is plagued with a long list of concerns. The EGR system is mostly to blame for some of them. A lot of build up in the intake which causes a host of problems. The oil cooler o-rings fail. Fuel system issues....
