03 e500 airmatic
So what's the deal with this rear clunking?? Should I do the shocks first and if its still there do the air springs? Haven't really found a way to check where the sound is coming from seems like people just throw parts at it until its gone. I've seen threads say air springs, shocks and rear subframe bushings....

Subframe bushings are the most likely cause. Air springs don't clunk, they just stop holding air. Shocks don't really clunk either. Throwing parts at the clunking noises can get really expensive.

I haven't because I have a 4Matic. The power distribution on a 4matic helps with longevity of subframe bushings. Spirited driving in an RWD E500 sends to much stress to the rear causing them to wear out prematurely. A friend of mine has an RWD E500 and his rear is clunky, too. We diagnosed it as subframe bushings and he will be replacing them soon.
