211 Won't Crank Over SOMETIMES
So i'm noticing that sometimes my E doesn't want to crank over, i think it happens once the car warms up a little. if it doesn't kick over i just let it sit for a few minutes and she starts right up. when it doesn't start she just cranks and cranks
it doesn't always have this issue, and this issue did start last week. it's happened to me twice maybe. i have no check engine light, the battery is good i recently replaced it. i am in need of new plugs which i will be doing this week
does anyone have any idea what it could be? maybe starter?
thanks for any help

Out Of Control!!
You are correct I just wanted to make sure that the engine turned over and there was not a bad starter, and you confirmed that it is not a starter issue.
My guess is that it is the classic crank position sensor!! A cheap part but a PIA to put in!!

I agree with you, but the only way to safely test without diagnostic software is you have to remove the sensor and check the resistance. Then you have to put it back or a new one.
On the other hand, I just plug in and run a quick test then the guided test for the sensor. I don't have to waste time and money guessing.

Does anyone have pictures of where the Crank Position Sensor is on a w211/ 2003 e320? I think I need to replace mine and do not know where to look on this car.

I just changed mine fixed the issue immediately
Very simple instal with small hands lol
Follow the harness that goes down the back of the engine, it splits into two and one side goes to the cps you can see if with a flashlight.
Uses a 8 femal torx

you can see the cps in the upper center portion of this picture
if you're doing this alone as i was, i zip tied the other half of the harness to the heater core hose? and the the black nylon one at the bottom of the picture to the steel braided line. was much easier not having to hold those out of the way while trying to get to the sensor.
you'll need an extension, the bolt is on the under side of the sensor, overall very easy to do

CPS found installed and working like a charm!
I found everything exactly as you guys said. I have been driving the vehicle since yesterday the 8th and no issues. It would be much easier if I had to do it again but I did use a bit of foul language as I laid over top of the engine to get to the cps. Thanks again for all the help.
