Motor mount problem stills exists with late 2003's
Just got off the phone today with the service manager. My 1st decade July 2003 built E500 needs the motor mounts replaced.

What is involved in replacing them? If it requires them to pull the engine, I'll pass. If its and easy job I might get it done. I think I have the problem. A fast knocking sound at idle? Am I right?

pull the engine for a motor mount? no way, unless MB has some really strange configuration.
why can't they get these faulty parts off the assembly line? it must be cheaper for them to replace the faulty mounts, then disrupt the parts flow to the line. not good. i wonder if the fact that the 2004 has the COMAND head unit standard means that the audio gateway part if updated?

Noooooo....the change is simple. No pulling the engine
Many of us had it changed on our pre navigation cars. I am shocked to here that they may still be using the "wrong" motor mounts. Just can't believe that a simple problem like this can still be around. My replacement E500 is a July build and I don't have the problem. (I think!)
The symptom is a ticking noice, much like a lifter or a diesel.
The simple test is to pull up a slight to moderate incline at low (not real slow) speed. Increase throttle as you climb and if you have the problem you will notice it right away.
The reason that that the 1800 to 2500 rpm is mentioned is that at higher speeds you won't notice it.
A pain in the butt to take it in and get it corrected, however it is not a big deal.

Definitely get the motor mounts replaced but make sure the correct motor mounts are installed. Apparently the motor mounts for the SL 500's (class 230) will fit E500's but they do not always take care of the problem.
I purchased my E500 used in September. It had the motor mount problem but for unfathomable reasons, the previous owners never had the problem fixed. Anyway, I took the car to my dealership and they replaced the motor mounts. The diesel sound remained. I took the car in again and, after the dealership overcame resistance from Mercedes, they ordered and installed a new set of motor mounts. The new set of motor mounts fixed the diesel sound problem.
The first replacement motor mounts had part number 230-240-00-17. The second set of replacement motor mounts had part number 211-240-05-17. I would insist that your dealership install the 211- ......... motor mounts.

Suspension pieces have to be loosened/removed and the engine is jacked up from underneath in order to replace the mounts. your car will need an alignment afterward (make sure they use the small holes in the wheels or tire strap method or your rims can get mared). The noisier mounts are actually of a newer design allbeit noisier, so for my 04 I've decided to leave them alone (went through it with my 03 and the less the dealer touches the better. )
