211 still rules!!

A lot of car magazines are loyal to BMW 5 series. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any performance comparison between the 211 and the new 5. Usually Car and Driver or Motor Trend put cars in this category through the rigors to see who comes out on top.
You know wise people said, don't mess with success. I guess Chris Bangle had his headphone on and missed that message.

Based strictly on performance, I don't see the 211 measuring up to the new 5.
Hey Brav - Are you still selling the M3? Can you post some of the info for me. Thanks.

In my mind, if you ain't got the looks you're a non starter.
They also showed a fully loaded 5 series and took pictures next to a maroon coloured E220 diesel with no options.
The E was not shown in its best light.
No offence to E owenrs on the board, but maroon is not the colour to go for IMO.

AUTOCAR in the UK did a back to back test recently and favoured the BMW - and yet all through the article they complained about its looks.

with MB second and bmw third! The other comparison was the 530d (which was tested without the new bmw technology.....e.g.active steering) and they said the car drove better without the options but still said the E320 cdi was their choice.....
Which issue/comparo was this?
just saw my first, in the flesh, 2004 bmw 5 series (light silver) and - wow - it did not look good!! Before I bought my E500, I first went to bmw to check out the 5 series and learned that a new body style was coming out so I backed away and headed straight for MB and so glad I did!!
YEAH!!!!!
My gf keep insist that it was a Pontiac, even when I showed her the BMW grill when (horrible) traffic set my car in front of the bimmer.
Only when I slowed down and showed the BM badge from the back that she believed it.
We finally agree on something: the new 5 is as ugly as the new 7.

the bimmer.org boards are starting to report dealers discounting 1500-2000. its a smart move, don't scare away a potential customer with MSRP pricing, because demand is not going to outstrip supply on these things once the intial "frenzy" ends.
I for one never feel that the Bimmer compares except as a pure track competitor, In luxury and class, the MB wins hands down. Even againsty the 7 series, our E sems more attarctive, luxurious and timeless.
And in all honesty, except for a few pops here and there, I rarely would use the marginal advantage in performance the 5 seems to offer.
My days are long, stressful and complicated to say the least. A long drive in the luxury and total comfort of my E is a pleasure. The Bimmer, I felt like I should be getting ready for a track workout to prove my cars worth.
IN Germany, when I visit my family- They tell me the MB is considered the more elite, yet very powerful , of the two.....Isn't that what we want ?
