I just got my car last week (w/NAV). When I called to set up the Tele-Aid they said that you get the service free for a year, but the directional assistance was an extra charge. Perhaps this is targeted marketing at non-NAV owners.

My experience will likely be the same as with OnStar. Keep for a year then cancel.

My understanding was that it is an extra charge as well.

It is an extra charge. I had it for a while on my S500. It wasn't worth the extra charge -- and you are charged for airtime for every call too. What I'd like to see is traffic showing up on the NAV map as a red line for example, giving you the ability to find an altewrnate before you are trapped. I think there are places in Europe where they can do this, but so far not in the US.

Airtime is roughly 35 cents a minute after the free first 30 minutes which is half used up already when you initially call to activate. That's what my dealer told me, so have them activate and say you know the rest and hang up. Its not really worth the $200+ per year after the free first year.

Tele-Aid

Have had mixed results- Called once- Tel-Aid reserved me a room at an Omni quite at the last minute and they were very courteous and efficient. I was on the road and held over and having no phone book, gave it a try Good result.

Second try- Called and asked for directions to shortest route from Corpus Christi Texas to Houston Texas. They routed me through San Antonio which is stupid. Absolutley dumb to drive 180 miles to the north them turn and drive 210 mile east when a direct path ( on available US Highway) was about 190 miles. They could not route me on anything but a Interstate it seemed.

Totally a waste I felt.
