What size tires?
Hi all,
I am thinking of going with 18"x9 or 18"x9.5. I don't know much about tire measurements.
What do the different tire dimentions mean?
like 255/40/18
I know the 18 is the size of the wheel but what do the rest really mean? What size would go on the above mentioned wheels?
I am sure one stands for profile and the other for the width or somthing like that but its not very intuitive.
Thanks and forgive a newbie for dumb questions.

Here's a good site that lets you visually alter the size components: Wheel diameter, tire diameter and aspect. It may help you visualize the relationships. Actual fit of a non-standard tire is a matter for trial and error in many cases. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Changes in wheel size are best recommended by a professional, particularly the offset of the wheel.
