How much gas is in your tank? Does your intrument cluster still give you a Distance to Empty estimate, and does it change as you drive/fill up? If so it may be just the gauge/cluster.

Several things here:
- Turn off your caps
- Why on earth did you buy an 11 year old car as as your first?
- While an 03 is cheap to get, don't buy it if you cannot pay the maintenance
- If you just got it, it must be under some kind of warranty?
- MY 2003 are known for electrical problems
- Finally, take it to the dealer and pay the $130 for diagnostics

There's no way its under warranty.
My advise... Feel V8 for a bit and donate it... or sell it really cheap. What do you have right now is nothing.. real trouble will be when your one of these goes bad airmatic suspension, sbc, compressors, electrical problems, anything related to optical ring..

Not to worry, sounds like you either have a faulty rear SAM or one or both fuel level sensors have failed. In any event the fuel level is sent by the SAM to the IC.
I would do the stuff that you can do first such as inspect the rear SAM for blown fuses----the rest, you need someone with factory or equal diagnostic equipment to quick test the system and locate the fault

A car like that, while enjoyable, is not for anyone who is not willing to take it to a GOOD independent MB shop (Which will not be cheap) or is able to do a lot of work themselves (which will still not be cheap).
If you want a first car to drive, buy a Honda or a Toyota (I am partial to Honda).
If you want a car to learn about cars, buy a pre-1995 well maintained pick-up truck or SUV, with as few electronics as possible. Better yet, start with a Pre-1980 Jeep, or VW.
But, if you still want to work on it, follow Plutoe's advice.
