Portable GPS

Just saw a Magellan Roadmate Portable Auto GPS System on the Costco site for $900. Would anyone familiar with such a system be kind enough to share their thoughts and experiences? I am considering getting one since I don't have a nav system in my car.

The Magellan systems I'm familiar with are actually not portable. To the best of my knowledge all of their systems require some installation, hence, you can't move their Navs from one vehicle to the other. Hertz Neverlost System are actually Magellan units and they are definitely not portable.

I would highly recommend looking at Garmin StreetPilot series. I've been using one for my SUV for the past 2 years and I love it. It's much better than MB's Nav. It's very intuitive and has more than sufficient technology built into it. They are truly portable with no hardwiring of antenna or anything else. Their latest model has touchscreen and even has a remote.

The new Garmin Street Pilot with the touchscreen is the bomb! Super easy to use with the touchscreen. And its very compact. Its the best out there.

I just took a look at Garmin Street Pilot on the company site. Looks pretty cool as well and is similar in size to the Magellan. The Magellan I saw must be a new model and is nothing like the Neverlost in Hertz cars. This has a sleek hand held design and comes with a vent monuting clip. This leads me to believe it can be moved from car to car. It is also touch screen. I will look into the two brands some more.

Be careful about drawing conclusions from ignorance! I have used the Magellan 750M for over a year now. I move it between 2 of my cars...without a problem because there is no installation. The computer is in a 8 x 5 case with a wire for the antenna, a wire for the DC, and a wire for the handheld. The unit's data base covers the USA.
Go to the Magellan website for details. Moreover, the Benz Nav functionality is lowbrow as far as Navs go. I've used Garmin, Alpine and Benz navs for years.

Magellan has two new models...the RoadMate 500 and 700. The difference betweent the two is that the 700 has a 10GB internal HD. The 500 comes with a 128MB CF card. The 700 will hold the entire Nav CD info so there is no requirement to download anything but Firmware or a total map update.

The street price I have seen for the 700 is $1099.

See the thread above for URL info on the Magellan.

I am trying to decide now whether to buy the Garmin 2610 or the Magellan 700...I am leaning heavily now towards the Magellan.

Thanks, Nevada Jack and all for your responses. I did some looking around and the street prices you quoted are pretty much what I have seen. I am also leaning toward the Magellan. The design is nice and sleek. It is definitely a good alternative for an after market Nav system.
