Comand Unit Swap

Is it possible to take out my '05 Comand unit and replace that with the '09 unit which is a lot more advanced in all aspects. Will the '09 unit work on an '05 vehicle? Has anyone done that?

It must have cost you an arm and a leg to put a 2014 Comand in a W210, I can't even begin to comprehend how that was even possible!

I went through this last month on my 03 e class.

I think its after 05 they changed to the gen 2 command. Has a media card reader on top. The plug on the back is different. So I could not upgrade.

I could be wrong. But I think the gen 2 command eliminates the need of the dvd drive and gateway in the trunk. And there for is a totally different wiring setup.

If your e class has a gen 1 command (no sd card slot) or an audio 50 with HK I think its cheaper to go with one of the after market comand duplicates. Personally I just stayed with my ntg1.

Plutoe, I was not asking about smart phones, and if you have no relevant answer to my question, just don't bother answering. Your esoterics and hypotheticals are pointless here!

DC2021, thanks for your feedback, clearly providing a comment that is directly related to question.

You may want to consider an aftermarket head unit from Dynavin.

Looks like a capable machine with lots of bells and whistles. They even list contact info to a local distributor in Fresno, worth giving him a call. THANKS!

Let us know how it goes! I know Dynavin has generally been frowned upon by many members here in the past as they're an iffy company based off China. They were a company that was very good at getting customers to buy their product then leave them hanging with non existent customer service. As I recall, many distributors have decided to stop selling Dynavin products.

The little research I've done thus far, confirms what you've written. I'm staying away from this toy!

The Dynavin unit will not work in USA spec cars. Over the years many have tried.... many have failed.

There is 1 guy on the forum who has transplanted a 2009 COMAND into his <2008 car. He detailed how he did it several years back here. He was an MB tech and spent many hours on it and advised that while he succeeded, he didn't recommend it as cost effective. The AGW and amp must be removed, and there is considerable rewiring.

Unless you are an MB Genius, don't even think about it... Our head units were already outdated when they were first designed.

No, I'm no MB genius It maybe cheaper to trade car in for an '09, than to do rewiring.

OK, questions has been answered and settled! Thanks everybody!

It is very much possible to upgrade to NTG2.5.

You need a conversion wiring harness, two amplifiers, NTG2.5 head unit, a few fiber optic cables, new Sirus radio box (optional).

Expect the conversion to run approx $4k.

I've did the conversion on my 2006 E320 CDI.
