2005 E500 4matic Wagon/Estate
Tone/reluctor ring headaches
I've spent about $1000 so far just isolating the problems with my ABS and ESP on my 2005 e500 wagon/estate with 4matic.
After replacing almost everything short of the control unit, I am now told that the tone ring is shot, and it is the metal toothed--i.e., non-magnetic type of tone ring which require replacing the whole axle assembly (which they call the 'drive shaft'--what is the proper term? Halfshaft?) on the rear driver's side at a cost of $1654.00 for the part and $382.50 for labour.
When I complained, they said perhaps I should think about selling the car.
So here are my questions:
1) Can the reluctor ring alone be replaced? I cannot find such an aftermarket part.
2) If I do have to buy the whole assembly, since the Chrysler LX platform used the e500 rear end, would it be compatible?
3) If I find an aftermarket replacement, how does one know what type of reluctor ring is on it?
I am grateful for any help here. I love this car, but this is all getting rather depressing.

Out Of Control!!
I wish I could be of more help, however I know there is someone in the UK selling the rings and yes a good ole American machine shop would have no difficulty in removing and install the new ring----I would be patient and google the reluctor ring!!

You don't mention what the original symptoms were that prompted all those replacements. May be too obvious, but did you check the ABS wheel speed sensors?
