Question Yikes, Break Dust !

Ok, has anyone figured out a way to keep the break dust on the inside of their rims down to a minimum ?

Holy crap ... got the car washed yesterday and even driving the car home put a nice new coat of the grey stuff inside the rims --- thing is that with the 5-star'ish rims you can see right inside them ....

What about spraying it with some sort of tephlon ?

I use wheel wax, protects the wheel finish and dust is easier to remove. Brake dust is part of the MB luxury experience

so your recommending that I use these products (such as zaino) on the inside of my rims to help prevent break dust from sticking ?

u can try. i did that when i just got my wheels, but after a doing it a few times i just said **** it, as long as outside is clean I'm cool. I dont think anything will work on the inside except cleaning it after every time you drive.

I found that Wheel Wax, Collinite Insulaotr wax or any good carnuba paste wax on the wheel inside and out makes it way easier to clean the wheels at each washing. I use P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner with a sponge each time I wash the car. The wheels look like new after each washing.

You can try Wheel Shields from the Herrington Catalog....
http://store.yahoo.com/herrington-catalog/m178.html

I'm told the shields work well. The trade off is they wear out the break pads about 50 percent sooner. However, you should be brake dust free.

Wheel Wax can be found at http://www.wheelwax.com.

This EZ-Detail brush has become my favorite wheel tool. Gets all the brake dust out from behind the wheel and then I use it once or twice on the fender wells. Works great!

Thanks all. I just ordered the Wheel Wax -- at $15 it's worth a try.. I can always graduate up the wheel guards.

Anyone use the Wheel Wax yet ? I did some research before seeing your post and others have claimed that spraying the wheels with a anti-static spray helps as it neutralizes the particles that cause the dust to stick.... sounds crazy but maybe it is true....

The wheel wax claims to do the same, plus clean and shine.

With wheel wax, some dust will be present but it will wash off with a hose. Application is needed every other wash. It could be an illusion, but it seems to be more effective after a 5 or 6 applications...perhaps the wax is thicker. I'd like to try the anti-static spray if you know where to find it.

If only MB could apply teflon to the insides of the wheels.

yea, right ... tephlon might do the trick. Well if you think/find anything else please keep in touch.

Here is the link to the anti-static spray.

A note of caution: be very careful if you spray anything around the rotors. You can create pad glazing and squeal issues with your brakes. Brake dust seems to be an oft-mentioned tradeoff for MB's desired braking performance.

1. Never put brake shield into your car, that's the quickest way to overheat your brake & cause the rotor to wrap
2. As long as you go w/ OEM brake pad, you will have brake dirt. Don't waste money and time on thing like wax or spraying stuff, brake dirt will stick to your rims
3. If you want to fix the problem, the only solution is to change brake pad. Benz, Audi, and BMW don't make brake pads for their cars, they buy them from 3rd party company (amazingly, same set of company that produce brake pad for all three companies). Soft brake pad help make the car brake smooth, but the bad side is that its' dirty. That's why you see front wheels of most german cars look pretty nasty. Fortunately, these company also produce pad that brake smooth, but produce little or no dirt. They cost twice or three time as much as OEM brake pad.

I changed mine to PBR deluxe (from FastLane), fix the problem. My car has chromed wheels, 2 weeks and almost no dirt whatsoever. W/ the OEM pad, it's 1 day before the rims turn black.

Search the forum, you'll know.

I think Ill get out the soap and water and leave well enough alone.

No breaks when it rains is too risky to get rid of break dust (lol).

I tell you I found Zaino worked well but really hard to apply in those E500 Sport wheels on a regular basis.

I spray full strength " Simple Green" on the wheels,
( Don't get this on the waxed painted as it removes wax) on the inside, and on the tires.

TThe first high pressure pass with my hose nozzle washes off 70% of the dust, and if I am in hurry thats all I want. Otherwise, I will scrub out with brushes and a rag- never the less the brake dust easily cleans off.

Hardest thing for me is cleaning under the spot where the brake caliper assembly is as it has such a narrow clearance.

Wheel Wax

Received the wheel wax in the mail yesterday and applied it to the rims this morning --- for one thing, they are really shiney now.

Ill keep you posted as to how they combat the break dust.
