Need help with 2003 E500 vent/floor mode

Have noticed that no matter what we select the heat/ac air to come out, it only comes out the vents. Defrost of windshield works, but getting heated air to the floor does not happen.
Is this something that needs to be synchronized like the window motors & sunroof? Your thoughts would be appreciated...

This is a quirky design from Benz. On the AC/heat dash, there are two round knobs that control the temps, if I recall correctly, you need to pull out the out ring and rotate the arrow pointed to the desired vent of your choice and release the ring. Leave it in between floor and face vent, you will get both.
