Expected life for voltage regulator?
Last night I made the unwelcome discovery that my battery had been killed off by the cold weather. I replaced the battery and I'm back on the road, but it got me thinking as to what else the problem could have been if it wasn't the battery. As my voltage regulator was the undoing of my W210, I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to the expected lifetime (miles, years, or both) should be for a voltage regulator. Is it worth preemptively replacing? Should I consider premptively replacing the alternator if I can find a good price on one? I have approximately 210k miles on a 2003 W211.

Out Of Control!!
If that is what you call it.
In plain language, regulators are one of those parts with a very wide lifespan. In general should go the life of the alternator, but depending on the failure mode can be shorter or longer. It is not a "Wear" item, but not a hard part either.
