Front Brake Replacement

Just had my front Discs and pads replaced, since then my pads seem to clatter when I go over a sharp bump or pot hole. Tried a new fitting kit still the same. is there two different size pads? My car is a 2008 E class saloon W211. Anyone any Ideas

Did you remember to use brake quiet/lube/whatever-you-want-to-call-it all along the back of the brake pads?

My guess is it'll be that, or one of the bolts is not tight. There's 2 pins that hold the pad retaining clip in place, make sure those are hammered all the way in and the retainer is positioned correctly. Next would be the two bolts that hold the caliper to the carriage assembly.

The installer says they are ok, but they are not genuine Mercedes parts, previous pads were and they were fine. I had noticed that some brands of pads slightly differed in length only by 1.4mm, thought this may cause pads to be a little loose in the calliper.
Would the fact that pushing the Pistons back to fit the new pads may have caused air in the fluid and allowing the Pistons to relax back too much!

No, you have to push the caliper pistons back to install new pads anyway. The second you step on the brake pedal the first time they will press back against the brake pad and be fine. Air will not get into the system from doing that...not unless you break the piston seal, but then you'd have a brake fluid leak.

Aftermarket pads shouldn't be a problem. I used akebono ceramic pads with oem rotors on all 4 corners and it was a noticeable upgrade. No squealing, hardly any brake dust.

Should probably take the car back to the installer and have him look at it.

why do you think that it is the pads that are clattering, as opposed to some aspect of the suspension system?

I bought a 2004 e320 several months ago and recently had the lower ball joints replaced. When I was driving car home I put down my window to see if the ball joints were still making noise and I heard a clanking and thought that the mechanic jacked something up or didn't tighten something. I took the car back and after several minutes with the car up in the air he found the problem...loose fitting aftermarket brake pads. I didn't believe him at first but I drove it over some rough road and gently applied the brakes and the noise disappeared. cheap aftermarket ill-fitting brake pads!

It's silly to think that aftermarket pads are bad just because they are not made by, or in the box from, the manufacturer. I use textar brake pads and rotors on my w211, and they work fabulously. They are made in Germany, and used as original equipment on Porsche Audi and other lines. And they are equal if not superior in quality to the OE pads. Jurid and Pagid are the OEM manufacturers, and sell hardware in their own boxes, and you have Brembo and others who also make exceptional brake equipment. There is no reason whatsoever to use pads and rotors or other brake equipment in a Mercedes box at three times the price. It's just stupid.

I did not say all aftermarket pads are bad...but there are really poorly made pads out there..all you have to do is look on alibaba. My pads are a good example of this. To the original poster..all you have to do is find a rough patch of road..if the clanking goes away when you lightly depress brakes, your pads don't fit.

"Not Mercedes Approved" is meaningless when it comes to brake hardware.

Buying brake pads off of Alibaba, on the other hand, is insanity. Of course they don't fit.

Any installer who used pads off of Alibaba should give you your money back so you can take it somewhere better, which would be pretty much anywhere. Obtaining exceptional hardware at a good price isn't hard. For about $50-60 a set, you're in business, so who would want to use anything cheaper? http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/200...e_pad_set.html

My instructions to my Indy were that I didn't need the parts to come in a Mercedes box, but I wanted at least that level of quality, if not higher. In went the Textar rotors and pads. Perfect!

There's some relevance considering mercedes benz approved pads aren't noisy..... except the ceramic high dollar ones.
