HIGH QUALITY interior of NEW E CLASS according to many mags
"High-value materials and processing in the ****pit "
according to Auto Motor und Sport.
and I will scan later an article by "CAR" which praises the new E class interior... it looks like MB listened and responded. now all we need is for it not to have the rattles and electrical glicthes of the ML and C and it looks like we could be back on track.

It's nice to hear that Mercedes is stearing towards the right direction. I was disappointed to see all those articles bashing about the bad quality.

It's great that MB is getting back on track regarding interiors. Rumors are also going around about the S-class facelift which will have much better interior quality.

I've spent quite a long time sitting in the car, both on the front and back seat and looking at the boot space.
Generally I was impressed with the materials, but to be honest there were minor things that irritated me (sunvisor vanity mirrors' flaps made of cheap plastic). The steering wheel was pleasantly thick and surprisingly small in diametre (good thing), shutlines between the plastic and wood trim were very fine, the central console looked more like carved than assembled, also it had certain B&O feel to it...Its' flat buttons, simple and clear symbols, etc., I liked it.
Comfortable seats, a lot of leg space at the back, but there will be a problem for taller people to get in/out of the back because the roof is sloping down dramatically and you have to bow to get in or out, reminds me of Jaguar XJ.
Boot is HUGE with not too many things protruding. One thing which I didn't like were the hinges, they were mounted under the rear window and I didn't notice any shock absorbers, basically the whole boot lid damping mechanism looked kinda primitive to me. It is using springs I guess.
All in all I liked it and could live with these small low quality bits.

was in Hong Kong when MB presented new E Class there. noticed the knobs for central compartment holding cell phone broke on 3 of the 4 cars there. Latch for first aid kid under front passenger seat flimsy (same for new SL), have to slam close.
did not notice a cup holder. just a box like the 94 C-Class (for those who have seen it), but you can buy it and install there.
the in-dash 6 CD disc changer is very cool. press the button in the central console and a hydraulic motor opens the lid upwards. the same button closes the lid hydraulically.
there is an option to close the trunk electrically like the new BMW 7 series, but i don't see one in the cars presented.

When you say the new E has an option where you can "close the trunk electrically", do you mean it has a feature that pulls the lid shut once you have manually pushed the trunk lid down to the fastener (available on some Lexus models and other makes), or is it like you see on the Chrysler Town & Country Minivan where you simply push a button and the rear hatch closes from a wide-open position? Test drove the 7 series beamer but the electric trunk was never mentioned by the salesman...
