Is my SBC getting weak?

I recently bought a 2006 E320 CDI and the SBC issue started worry me.
The SBC starts quite often-- if the engine is running car in neutral, every 2 time I step on brake I can hear ""brrrrrr". when the car is left in garage engine is off and key on, every 5 minutes I can hear the same sound.
Dealer confirmed my car SBC is slightly noisier than normal, but said they can't do anything until I see ""visit shop" sign.

I did search some people say SBC should start every 4 times brake action, and the pump noise is hard to notice.

are these indication of my SBC getting weak? Thanks.

I wasn't aware of SBC issue at all before. and I didn't notice the noise in test drive. It's more noticeable in garage.

If not already equipped, there is a replacement suction hose with damper that will substantially lower noise.

The car comes with the damper hose already.
I can live with the noise. I'm more worried about the running frequency of SBC pump. It starts every another time brake pedal applied. Is it too often?

When was the last brake fluid flush?

A recent full STAR flush seemed to help it pump less frequently in my '03 e500. I never really paid attention to it, so it could just be in my head.

No fault codes, unit should be fine as they say. If brake fluid has never been changed for peace of mind have them replace and bleed system with SDS.

I'd start setting some money aside just in case.... You wont die if it fails... or at least that hasn't happened yet... good luck!

If your pump needs to be replaced your fluid gets flushed anyways...... flushing fluid now will not eliminate the chance of the pump failing.... it'll just fail. sad but true.

There is a firmware update for the SBC unit that will dramatically reduce the amount of noise it makes. Only the dealer can do the firmware upgrade, as it requires special SBC specific hardware to do it.

If it's still making a lot of noise after the firmware upgrade, you can have the suction damper installed and it'll be completely quiet.

Do you know the details of the FW? Version? For which years?

I did ask my dealer to check possible FW upgrade and was told no for my car. They charged 1 hr for diagnose though. I paid $160 for a car wash.

Damper hose was installed(at factory I guess).

Not sure what years. If you have Star hardware that's running recent software (say, 2012 or newer), it'll tell you if it needs the firmware upgrade, as it won't even let you go into SBC section without first flashing the updated firmware.

I checked SBC with a 2012 star system. It doesn't say I need a FW upgrade. However it says my SBC HW version is 29/05 so as software. My think is 29th week in 2005 which means it's never been upgraded.

The diagnose seems ok only failed one item which reported possibly air in brake system.

And this is why I recommended brake fluid change utilizing STAR procedure inclusive of bleeding.
