Instrument Panel failed

I had an instrument panel fail in my W211 and have a question.

Background - I had the dash removed to replace a heater control valve motor. Shortly after, the instrument display bezel lights stopped working, then a few days later the rest of the instrument cluster also stopped working. I removed the display and changed with a used one, which works fine except mileage display. All other functionality and systems work with the spare panel.

Question:
- I have heard there is no way to get the used display to work correctly, as the dealer cannot flash the mileage, and an old unit cannot be made to work with the vehicle. I will have to either buy a new one or get my old one repaired. Is that accurate?

Thanks

Someone using STAR should be able to buffer the default data from original IC and transfer cached basic data to replacement IC.

Last May, I was able to swap my W211 instrument cluster (IC) with an AMG that came out of a W219..
