Alarm Self Triggering

2007 E350: from time to time, with no discernible predictability or any cause-effect factors, the alarm activates itself on our E350.

I can rule out a key getting pressed in wife's purse or in my pockets; the alarm appears to activate on its own accord without the possibility of the key fob button having been pressed.

Where to begin?

If you have any insight into these kinds of problems, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks to all.

OK ... I'm answering myself and amending my original post by deleting my statement that the seat-position memory function appeared to be connected to the spurious alarms. I do not think the two malfunctions are related.

After further review ... I found that the red PANIC button on my wife's key is split, or cracked ... not much, almost unnoticeable, but split/cracked nevertheless. So I swapped keys and removed the batteries from what had been her key. The alarm on her E350 hasn't activated since then. We shall see ....

Here I am replying to myself again. Again. Even with the batteries removed from the suspected faulty key, the alarm went off again just a bit ago. I used the "good" key to shut off the alarm ... but it reactivated again a few minutes later. I opened and reclosed the hood, trunk, and all four doors ... didn't change anything. Alarm goes off occasionally.

Maddening.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but it wouldn't hurt to have your car checked for codes at a good indie shop with a mercedes equivalent computer, or possibly wait for some of the more expert members like konigstiger to respond.

I had a similar problems with two cars of another brand. . .

One turned out to be a rusted hood latch cable, which didn't allow the latch to lock completely, and the other turned out to be a hood latch assembly that was damaged in an accident. It still locked but the intrusion switch in it was broken.

Can you check all of your locks/latches to ensure that they close and stay closed fully?

Steve: Thank you for your post. I noticed last night that I can press the hood a wee bit when it is fully latched. That is, I can press down on the front of the hood and detect a very small bit of "give" or movement, as though the latch mechanism might need tightening ... but the hood is in perfect alignment with the fender edges, so it doesn't need to go any lower. I opened the hood and closed it rather smartly. The alarm hasn't gone off since then. [Fingers crossed]. MBs have some peculiar traits.
