resetting codes
Removing both positive and negative battery posts and attach them to each other for few minutes. Would this procedure help resetting codes as my general mechanic suggested?
Thanks
Thanks

I doubt it. Nor would I care to do that given the possibility of cooking a rather expensive piece of electronics, of which there are many built into these cars.
Less than $50 will get you a basic OBD-II reader, which will safely clear most codes. A couple hundred dollars (still way less than one of the many computers on the car) will get you a good scanner that will read/clear just about any codes (engine, transmission, body, brakes, etc.) that your car can throw.
If you decide to to the "free" option your mechanic suggests, let us know how much it ends up costing...
*I'm not trying to be a smarta$$ but seriously: I wouldn't even consider doing it the way he suggests.

Removing the negative for a while should do. No need to attach them really.
Alternatively, you can spend about $20 on a bluetooth OBD2 reader from amazon that will work with your phone. You can use that with the Torque app on any android device to reset ECU, check codes, view live data etc..

So, on this same note... anyone have a scanner that they recommend? I'm just a little guy, so the top-level systems are obviously out of the question. I typically over-research everything I buy, so recommendations from other MB owners carries more weight with me than the reviews given from Ford/GM drivers on Amazon.
Any you guys could recommend around the $50-100 range for general use?

Yep, Maryland to be specific. No specific units you have in mind? I don't mind handing cash over in person, I just generally find Amazon to carry higher quality electronics for about the same price compared to the chain shops around here. Thanks!

I'm looking hard at the icarsoft i980 II that's on Amazon for about $200, maybe cheaper on Ebay. Seems like it'll read everything there is to read and a few other tricks too. No, it isn't a STAR but it might be as close as you'll get without spending 5x that. Dedicated unit for the MB brand.
Anybody got some input or experience with this?
