W211 front clunk sloved! After 2years

I have had a front end clunk on my 2006 w211 Sport for two years!
Replaced all ball joints and arms including sway bar links and bushes.

The clunk was only present at low speeds and when not present when cold.
I replaced the steel (black) control arm previously so discounted this.

The middle balljoint failed prematurely and was the cause of the clunk / rattle at low speeds.

I jacked the hub up slowly with no wheel and observed the sway end link move and clunk. Following a more detailed check it was the control arm balljoint.

The bad arm was a 2uear old Bilstein (rubbish) had fitted Lemforder all smooth...

Just to clarify: the clunk is the middle spring control arm ball joint (hard to diagnose)

how was the ride in your car? i am battling a harsh ride on any kind of rough pavement, have replaced a lot of parts including control arms and all ball joints and actually think it may be worse since then

my suspicion was a defective part also

The ride is now Smooth and tight. For me it was that middle balljoint. The ball joint bushing had torn under load. I may have hit a pothole.

clarification of what driveline you have would be sweet, 2wd or 4matic? and also glad you figured it out, however protocol on front end noises is to remove sway bar completely then road test, you rule anything related to sway bar out by doing this first, lesson learned! For two years, whoever you have been taking your car too clearly doesn't understand the basics of traceing driveability issues... You can press that bushing out correct? assuming you have a 4matic....
