Apparently, some folks have had success in utilizing a *majority* of the COMAND features with the non-MBZ phone.

I believe Cingular has now moved on to the GSM network, so if it's a recent phone from a major market, it should work.

Why don't you take the phone and test it in an equipped car in your dealership? That's what I remember trying a while back with a friend's AT&T phone--my attempt failed miserably though--leading me to believe that this can be a hit or miss thing.

it is definately a hit or miss thing, so when i found a non-mb phone that actually worked i was very excited--the phone itself is cingular, but is an old, outdated tdma, so it is not gsm, which apparantly do not work @all in mbs,,,

when I tried a non-MB Startac in my MB, it wouldn't stay powered up w/out holding the power button. I assumed the pin cinfiguration or software version is different. I'm in the wireless biz and even my Motorola rep told me I was SOL, and would have to buy a MB phone. I found one on ebay.

my car had the h/f kit, just phone was missing. I could have bought TDMA, GSM, or CDMA phone, as long as it was a Mercedes/Motorola StarTac/Timeport. If you're lokking to install the h/f kit, that's another ballgame. I wouldn't attempt it, but there's a DIY forum on Benzworld that has step by step instructions with phots, if you're brrave (or handy).
