Whaddaya think...staggered set up or not for a 4-matic???
Hey folks,
Time for me to give some business to the sponsors and order up a set of summer wheels and tires. Planning on going with AMG's and the new Michelin PS2's. for my 2004 4 Matic. Here's where I need the help:
Staggered set up or not? i.e.: 18 x 8.5s and 18 x 9.5s or just a set of 4 of the same 18 x 8.5's. I know I won't be able to rotate, but hey, I'm used to that with my 911. (3 sets of rears for every 1 set of fronts.)
I'm looking at the 5 spoke model 230 wheel vs. 211 as Tirerack says they will fit fine. The 230 is the same wheel with a 8.5" and 9.5" vs. 8" and 9". Does any one anticipate that extra 1/2 inch giving me problems that the supplier doesn't know about? Please give me your imput. Gotta get this done as the weather is starting to warm up and my snow tires are going to be taking too much abuse.

19"s are cool, but in MN with potholes, I am going to stick to 18"s. Thanks anyway for the info. Still, I need some feedback on going with a staggard set or not, based on the issue that this is a 4 matic. Will that matter? Should all 4 tires and wheels be identical sized? Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

In past years it was suggested to use identical sizes all around. NE1 know why Tire Rack has staggered wheel suggestions for the W211 4-Matic and not for the W210 4-Matic?
The W220 S-Class in the Sport Package does not come with staggered from the factory like on the RWD W220 with Sport Package.

I noticed that too. That TR has a staggered set up available for the 211 4matic on the web site, but not the 210 4matic. Also, they list the BMW xi with a staggered set up. I called and talked to a rep at TR and they acknowleged that, although they list staggered set ups for the 211 4matic on their web site, they do not recommend it. Sited the need for absolutely identical rotating diameters to prevent wear on diffs, and the lack of the ability to rotate tires front to back.
Guess I'll be going with the same size all around. Just thought it would look a lot more cool with wider tires in the back.
Thanks for all of your imput.
