2355-001/Possible EGR Issue?
All,
I have a 2008 Bluetec with 71k on the clock. It has been fairly reliable to this point... The dreaded oil cooler seal has failed which I have been putting off... however a new issue just reared its ugly head.
Fault code 2355-001 "exhaust gas recirculation control. The air mass is too small"
the 002 seems to have a little documentation on the internet, however the 001 issue is tougher to research.
I went ahead and ordered a new EGR as I figured it would need to be replaced at some point. I installed it, cleared the code. (I have and iCarsoft) Sure enough, the CEL came back on with the same code.
Short of taking it to the stealer to fix the problem, I thought there might be another issue that the community might think of?
Also, one more question... does the EGR needed to be coded to the car in order to work properly? Is there anything past just dropping it in and hooking it up I should know about?
Thanks for your help.

To answer your last question, No, the coding is not required.
I too have the CEL on for the ‘Current and stored’ fault code 2355-001 – “Check system ‘Exhaust gas recirculation control’. The air mass is too small.” I have a 08 E320 Bluetec (~ 206K Miles). Did an EGR evaluation in DAS and it came up with a failed test saying one of the measurement values was outside the tolerance range. The test result said ‘replace component Y27/9 (Left EGR positioner)’. And FYI, the test takes 5 minutes and at times the Engine RPM raises to 1400. I have attached some screenshots of my DAS screen displays during the diagnosis and evaluation.
If this may help someone else, I shopped for a new EGR valve online and found one at MB of South Atlanta website for less than $400. http://www.mbpartsworld.com/productS...erm=6421401860 . I printed that information and went to my local MB dealer. He said he would match the price of MB of South Atlanta and I gave the go ahead to order one (MB part # 6421401860). So I will be getting the EGR valve installed with them this coming week when the EGR valve comes in. I did ask if any EGR valve Control Unit adaptations are required through their MB Diagnostic Star system after replacing it and he checked with the technician and said no. Just remove and replace the old one and clear the fault code/s.
I’ll post again with the outcome once the EGR valve is replaced next week.

It may take a few days for the CEL to go off; I installed a new EGR valve for a similar code but reported excessive gas recirculation. Mine took about ten days for CEL to permanently disappear after replacement.

I know this thread is about a year old, but has anyone gotten a fix for this I am having the same issue (2355-001) on my 2008 ML320 CDI. Already replaced EGR and after resetting the CEL, it popped back up with the same code.

Guys, open the black plastic cap. Its full of sooth and dryade out fuel pieces. Clean it good with break cleaner and the spring of the valve with opens and closes on certain rpm's. 99% of the times the EGR works good but throws codes because of this debris in the Plastic cap. Its on the rear side of the EGR.
Clean it, and don't put this plastic cap back on, and ur EGR will last forever. Its my 3th CDI and EGR never let me down, also on high mileage cars.
