Retractable sunshade problem

My 2005 E500W4 had the clip to the driver's-side rear passenger door sunshade broken off and retracted down into the door by a car wash. My MB-trained mechanic is saying that the whole thing needs to be replaced and that the part is $850. What can I do? I would like to get it working. It seems to me like the whole thing shouldn't need to be replaced, really?

(This is not the power sunshade, but one of the side sunshades)

I'd pay me to find a reasonably priced used part for you instead. Here it is in advance http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/262548899664?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

I'd just assume his way to get the part is call the MB dealership and add some profit from the quote to cover his expensed and trouble. When you get the part used there is a risk that it doesn't work, isn't perfect, isn't real, or any other number of things. However for a part like a windows shade on a personally owned 11 year old car I would probably ONLY look for an acceptable sub-100 usd replacement instead of paying what your mechanic quoted. If I wanted new I'd also shop around. It isn't a critical part so you have the luxury of looking and finding a good deal.

I ordered the part. I bargained with that eBayer and got a good deal. I will let you know how it all turns out. My mechanic is shocked at the "good deal." I was disappointed when I went to pick up my car this afternoon. I had taken it in more than a week ago for an A/C recharge, only to find out that more than $1k worth of work was done, but the problem that brought me in to begin with, the A/C blowing hot air, was unresolved. "Somehow we missed the air conditioning service..." Grrrrr.

Did be inject dye? I'd probably check elsewhere for diagnosis too. Could be a hose or a seal or something if the compressor is OK. A greedy mechanic can make a lot on an AC job ...

He ended up doing an A/C service while I waited. It took about an hour. He apologized, saying that they must have missed it during the service. I find this supremely strange and unsettling. My mechanic has an all-star reputation. There is not a single blemish anywhere in his online reputation, nor has anyone I have interacted with said a bad word about him.
