engine discussion
for example E320 produces 221hp with 232 pounds of torque whereas the smaller capacity 530i produces 231hp with 300 pounds or torque. mercedes has only begun producing variable timing engines whereas bmw has long since used vanos.
both manufacturers produce great F1 engines.
does it have anything got to do with long term durability? 10 years down the road? or is it that mercedes benz is just slacking in technology?
any opinions guys?
i currently own an E320, Advantgarde. sunroof, airmatic
[B]i am curious why is that mercedes engines has less power output compared to bmws?
for example E320 produces 221hp with 232 pounds of torque whereas the smaller capacity 530i produces 231hp with 300 pounds or torque
The correct numbers are 530I:
HP 225 @5900 rpms TQ 214 @ 3500 rpms
E320:
HP 221 @5600 rpms TQ 232 @3000 rpms
The Eclass numbers are more suited for an automatic transmission the the BMW giving the Eclass a stronger off-the-line feel. Also the Eclass puts out 80% of its torques at 1800 rpms...
Also, Mercedes F1 engines are designed, developed and manufactured by Ilmor of Brixworth, England. They are a subsidiary of Mercedes and used to build the F1 engines for GM. Mercedes are at least part owners in Ilmor.
BMW do their own (I believe) and so do Ferrari (with the help of a Japanese engineer who did the Honda F1 engines). Of course Cosworth and several other F1 engines come from England.
