E500 W211 Wagon, rear folding backseat won't lock back in place.

Hi!

I tried to fold the small part of the backseat the other day and it will not lock back in place.
If I try to fold it back nothing happens and the dashboard says my rear seat is not locked in place. If I pull the handle once and then fold it back it will snap in about half way onto the locking mechanism and dashboard says nothing. But now it sits just "half in place", tilting forwards.
I tried to fold it back with some force and then it seems it locked but the dash said it was not locked in place.
Is something broken or do I just not understand how I am supposed to do?

Check if you have piece of dirt somewhere.
You can also try to latch the mechanism with a screwdriver on folded seat, what will allow you observe for any obstacles.

Maybe give a little shot of penetrating oil to free up the mechanism.

Thank you, I checked the mechanism quickly and did not see anything strange. The oil would certainly not be a bad idea, I maybe add some in there later on.

However, I folded the larger seat row also and that folded back just fine. And now I knew that they should just snap back in place and no electrical mumbo jumbo-thingy should engage that could break if done wrong. So I just folded it back with a bit more force and this time it worked and no warning messages on the dashboard.

So everything good in the end, I was just a bit afraid of breaking something and maybe the seats need a bit more force after 12 years.

Good to hear. Mine latches up pretty easily, but I know my old CLK55 had to be slammed good and hard.

Yes, it was a good feeling when it worked. I'm a bit scared of all the electronics in the car. A thousand things that can go wrong.

That's a reality with modern vehicles. So hold true for almost every brand as well.
