w211 wagon hatch issues

Looking for help with hatch closure issues. I have read everything I can find on the subject and my problem seems to be different than what has been discussed. My 2004 wagon hatch does not always close all the way. It is not a latch issue, it autolatches when the hatch makes it to the closed position. Instead, it is a close height issue. The hatch always opens properly but when I press the "close" button on the hatch the hatch usually (not always) goes down between 1/2 way and 3/4 way. If I hold the close button until the hatch is near the closed position it will follow all the way down and latch properly (I just have to be careful to get my hand out of the way in time!). It seems that the hatch just doesn't know where "closed" is. Help?
Thanks!

Thanks so much for the info. The steps that sound appropriate are 1,16,and 17 which, in a nutshell, say R&R the fuse and then "normalize automatic rear-end door". I have no clue how to do this, does it require Star Diagnosis? Thanks again for the help,

Yes, STAR to clear fault codes if stored and reset (normalize).

Thanks for the quick response. I guess that leaves me out of this repair, I do not have a Star diagnostic setup. It will have to wait until next trip to dealer, which I hope won't be for many years.

Have a great Turkey Day,
