Glow plugs e320

somebody school me on glow plugs. I've done a ton of research on the 5v vs 12v plug issues etc. I'm only posting this because I'm lost at this point. New to me 2005 cdi had a couple burned out plugs. I changed them. Check engine light back on a few more burned out plugs including one new one. Ordered another set of plugs and a new controller the one under the intake manifold. Put in all new plugs and controller a couple days later have a burned out plug. I've only used the beru 5v plugs which is what I pulled out originally. Tested the voltage going to the plug and get anything from 9-5 volts upon turning key and starting. While engine running I get I constant 5 volts or so which never shut off. Engine was warm during this test. I also replaced the thermostat as I read that may be culprit to plugs staying on. Any help is greatly appreciated as I just spen about $500 in parts and still have the same problem. My theory is to put 12v plugs in because 9 volts going to 5v plugs seems excessive.

The plugs don't shut off, you say? I'd be looking at the cost of a new glow plug controller or (if it is a new controller) looking into where the controller gets its signal from that tells it to turn off. You replaced the thermostat - did it come with a new temp sensor? If the sensor is wonky, it could be (wrongly) telling the controller that the car is cold and needs the plugs lit up to keep the car running.
The 5V plugs from Beru are the right ones. Keeping them always on will surely lead to their early demise.

Someday I'll get a STAR setup so right now take this for what it's worth (free, nothing): Sounds like the car needs to be connected to a STAR diagnostic to see what ails it before you start throwing more parts at it. Those glow sticks aren't cheap and it sounds like the controller is being given bad information and it keeps the glows on until they burn out. Hell, in Sunny Southern California you'd be just fine with NO glows (unplug the whole system and live with the CEL light) until you can get it properly diagnosed. The first cold start of the morning might need an extra couple of seconds of cranking and might be a bit smokier than you'd like, but I don't doubt you'll get away with it until you properly fix it.
