The first think I would check is your air-filter and other intake components like sensors, fuel injectors and the fuel-pressure regulator. Other reasons could be a clogged fuel return line.
I wouldn't use that. Or check with your indie pretty sure he'll offer free advise, or check interweb.

I'm assuming your car is a CDI... I would say the black smoke is either you're running rich or running dirty. Running rich fuel:air ratio could be due to MAF sensor(s) not working properly or clogged air filters or boost leak. Two of those would trigger a check engine (CEL) DTC. Running dirty could mean that your DPF is full of soot and not regenerating the soot to ash. In any case, do you have any CEL? If so then a good place to start is to read the codes.

Yes it's a cdi
I have cleaned the maf and checked the air filter, both of them were ok, not dirty
There's no codes or cel and this makes my mission difficult

Ok, process of elimination. If there are no CEL/DTC then it's not likely running rich unless one or more glow plugs are intermittently working on and off but even those would show the glow plug symbol on the dash. So my best guess is that you have soot build up in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or the Catalytic and/or NOx are dirty. You can add a DPF cleaner to the DPF through one of the sensor ports to clear the soot filters and force the regeneration process (ie convert soot to ash). It's not too bad of a procedure. There is a YouTube video of someone doing this on a Sprinter. Give that a try and let us know the results.

Cheers.

In fact the glow plug symbol is appearing right after engine is on, it stays for maybe 1 minute and then disappears
it doesn't effect the startup, my w211 starts perfectly, I don't feel anything just the light on the dash
and the dpf probably I will try
thanks

My cdi smokes when I press hard on the pedal. I can make it smoke some during the day and at night time I can really see a lot of smoke when I look through the mirror. The newer bluetecs do not smoke as much as they have the dpf system. Someone mentioned for you to clean your dpf. Do you even have one? Do you have to ad adblue to a separate tank?

I have a 2005 CDI and it runs clean; however, when I floor the gas peddle, it has always smoked out the back. Since day one.

in 2005, it was not a clean diesel.

In young person pickup truck parlance, this is called 'Rolling Coal' and for some strange reason, it is thought of as cool. I used to think it was funny to do it in front of somebody that was going slow in the fast lane and I finally got passed. However, I did it once to some young guys in a purple Nissan and they were VERY upset with me and I think wanted to tell me so personally. I try not to do it anymore.

I think you're okay with the smoke,
Peter

Hi,
It might be late but i would like to point that i uave the same problem.
Failed my MOT because of exesive smoke. Everything in engine bay is brand mew, from filters to oil without any check engine lights and codes.
BUT, have you checked your intake manifold/air collector. Just unplug the the black big hose just before the grey engine cover and you will see that there ist black soot and with a high chance that the flaps are blocked ore even broken not letting enough air in the engine under hard acceleration. Best solutiin is to change the intake manifold or remove it and clean it.
Keep in mind that all diesel engines do smoke a little but anything beyond that is exesive and needs to be taken care of.
Hope this helps.

I am writing English for the others,
it seems a good idea and probably it is like you said
I know it is hard to remove and check/ clean, is there any way to clean it without dismantling? or if something is broken/ wrong can it be found by the scanner ?

Si je?
It is not easy to detect a problem with a scaner because of the electro motor that alternates the flaps might be working so i does throw code but the connecting rodes to the individual flaps might be broken. So, as i said, just remove the hose that goves to the intake manifold, its quit easy just one metalic clip, and see for yourself if ts clogg

ed with soot.

Also, of you smell unburned fuel when starting the car in the morning or if you floor it in the higheat gear (mine is a 6 speed manual, floorit it in 6th at 100kmh for example) the car will go in limp mode, it does not respond to the throttle unless you turn off and restart the vehicle. Its a clear sign that the fuel/air ratio is disturbed because of the restricted intake manifold thas clogged. As you can see in the image attached, its impossible to clean it mounted in the engine bay. All the soot will go to the pistons and destroy the engine. The disassembling, cleaning and reassembling of the part may take up to 5 hours as told from my trusty mechanic. Hope this helps!
Its a standart procedure for older cars as its a normal proces that happen as the car gets driven through the years.

I didnt read all the post carefully but 2005 CDI does not have a DPF. Your intake manifold flaps are partially stuck closed, probably linkage to servo is disconnected, causing rich condition, black smoke is unburned fuel. You can wire the flaps open by tying onto the flap linkage with some SS safety wire or fix the linkage going to the servo. Thats my guess of your condition. After tying the flaps open you will need to accelerate hard often open to burn out accumulated deposits in EGR circuit. You could also remove the EGR and attempt to clean it. The ball and socket linkage to the servo is what gets worn out and disconnects.

W211 220CDI 2002
Update on my W211 220CDI 2002.
So ive took my W211 to a mechanic lately to have my intake manifold checked and cleaned. First, the moment he removed the first metal pipe that comes from the EGR valve and i was a little shocked although i knew that it had some 240k km on the clock and that was more or less normal (pic 1). After all the bolts had been undone and the manifold was out, i was even more shocked. As seen on the 2nd pic, the manifold was as new as i could have ever imagiened. All the flaps were clean and the all the links to the servo motor were nowhere near to broken. So... with all the pipes and EGR cleaned with cleaning solution and cheap diesel and back on the motor block, ive thought that the black smoke was for ever gone. Nope. Although the motor seems to run a little smoother the smoke is there. After all i had to take my car to another specialist to have my injectors checked. He said that when the smoke continues to exist, the last problem has to be one ore more partly blocked injector. AND the cleaning cost for 1 injector was 100€. Aaaaa....
Ill keeo you updated when i have the money and time to have this last service on my car done.
Hope all this helps even a little to understand the problem on those old but reliable cars.

thanks for the reply
my 220 w211 when its cold in the morning after it is turned on, when gears engaged D or R it starts smoking and then switched off immediately, I doubt it is related with the air but I should open the intake manifold first
