1922 Ford Model T / no OBD
Former owner of 1985 300tdt as well
Mine was white.
I got rid of it mainly becouse after fixing 20 oil leaks, I still could not get to couple more.
Than even I bought gasoline wagon as replacement, the newer generation engine delivered better mpg in gaser, while jump from 120 to 230 HP was nice addition.
Coming to your question, I was having similar dilemma last year, but based on engine choice.
I seek diesel, where wagons are not available, so it was R320BTC or E320BTC.
Even R is practical car, it is ugly and they don't have too good records.
So E won.

I own a 2006 R500 and a 2004 E500 Wagon. Not exactly the vehicles you are considering but my input might be worthwhile.

I won't bore you with tales of what can go wrong as you can learn that from any owner of either one. Plus, age and maintenance affect your risk exposure more than vehicle DNA.

Both vehicles cruise effortlessly, stop well and handle better than most other things their size. I actually love the airmatic and now find myself missing it when I drive other vehicles. The R is very comfortable in each of it's three rows of seating. The E is also very comfortable but less so for the second row passengers. The E wagon has a much bigger cargo footprint without folding down the seats but with the second and third rows down the R can carry enormous cargo. The E handles better than the R and gets a couple miles/gallon better fuel economy (mind you both of mine have the same motor, so the comparison here is mass and air resistance). R has better ground clearance, even when raised up the E will start 'plowing' snow before the R.

I'd say that for a road trip with all three kids the R would win out, just because each passenger has more personal space. Heading out for a shorter adventure I tend to take the E as it is more fun to drive.

Personal pick, but I would go for the E wagon. Good handling, and good cargo space and a nice shape.

^^^^ THIS!
Definitely E-Class, as the R looks like a jacked up German Version of a Minivan, with the attempt to be compatible in the US Market.

E-wagon ALL DAY.. R-class looks like a common Japanese mini van.

I have an 06 E500 wagon and 08 R350. Like the guy above stated you can find out all the issues both have. I would get the 09 E350 wagon if I had no or 1 kid. I would get a 09+ R350 if I had 2 or more kids. The 2nd row in the R is worth its weight in gold and foot well room for the front and rear seat passengers. Hope that helps.
