Front Spring Broken

Backing out the garage I notice the car was "unsprung" so stopped and sure enough the LF spring is broken.

I don't know when it happened because SHMBO pulled the car into the garage and is the regular driver.

We had a rear spring brake last year. I was told it is not uncommon in Chicago due to salt use on the roads.

The spring is down around the bottom of the shock. From my quick look, I could not see where it should have been siting. (Is it common to work its way past the retainer, or do retainers also fail?)

How hard it sit to change? Are there parts usually needed beside the spring?
(Rubber spring pads, etc.)

Not super difficult but you'll need a spring compressor.

if you have a coil spring compressor, shouldn't be much of a deal. without, you'll want to make a quick call to get an estimate on some life insurance, precisely plans with a suicide clause. lol. just playing.

Back when I had my '05 E320 CDI, I replaced all 4 springs within a few months of each other, almost like they just timed out. (3 were rusted through/broken at the bottoms). Replacing them wasn't hard, and I don't recall having to use a spring compressor on the front struts either. MIGHT have replaced the strut assembly rather than just the spring, but it was several years ago. Rears were easy: drop the connecting arms, pull out the broken spring, stuff in a new one, reconnect the linkage, done. An alignment will be a good idea.
