2009 E350 Clicking/Ticking Steering Column near Trim

Anyone experience an annoying clicking / ticking noise from center-top of the steering column where it meets the steering column trim ( near the sliding leather piece)? The noise manifests itself when driving over bumps especially washboard bumps. It's not a suspension clunk or anything like that. If I hold the steering wheel firmly and push upwards as if trying to lift it (without too much force), the clicking goes away.

The clicking/ticking definitely does not come from the cluster bezel. I had fixed a noise issue there a long time ago with stick-on velcro.

This is driving me nuts. Has anyone ever lubed the column trim piece?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Cheers
