trunk latch will not lock

2006 E-350 4 matic wagon
trunk latch will not lock
recently my 2006 E350 4 matic wagon trunk started acting up. mainly it will not lock, i can pull the trunk down and from the driver side or the trunk outside handle it will open. the problem starts when I push the trunk red button square switch to close it. it comes down pulls itself in and then it opens all the way up again. it is not latching. also with this symptom the led light stays on on the driver trunk switch and there is also a warning that the trunk is open on the dash. please will anyone out there help. i'm a pretty decent mechanic with plenty of tools and decent auto electrical knowledge so I can be able to troubleshoot if someone leads me in the right direction. thanks beforehand..
