E500 4matic starter replacement
Search function here didn't turn up anything on this job ( but I am on my phone so if I missed one forgive me ). I did the Bosh starter on the wife's beloved E500 estate the other day. It's a 4Matic so a RWD should be easier.
I didn't take photos but I just wanted it out there that you DO NOT have to pull the exhaust. Not a nice job but not insane, just fiddling. I did the repair with hand tools on jack stands in the driveway as the garage was occupied.
Short list is pull front driveshaft, the yank the upper motor mount bolts. Jack the motor as high as possible without hitting the body and it buys you more room to- Pull the heat shield. Lower the motor and pull the alternator. When you pull the wires off the back of the alternator it frees up badly needed wire length. The pull the starter bolts and raise the motor again. You can now maneuver the starter to disconnect the wires, my car actually had enough wire to take the starter out and disconnect once removed. There is only one angle the bugger comes out, but it will come out!
Just hope this helps someone.
Cheers,
K
