Everything is possible when money and time are no object.
Per my experience, some commands centers don't have option to add camera or GPS as this is what I was checking.
IMHO talk to forum sponsor who offers 360 cameras. He posted offers in W212 section.
I have 360 cameras (4 of them) on my Ford truck and in big vehicle it is huge help. Saving me lot of time getting out of the car and checking what's behind me.
Maybe less important on sedan, but since you feel you need it, go for the best.

call the dealer and they will check if adding camera is doable with your command.
Still those cars did offer only single camera, while for a little bit more you can have 360 view.

I'd like to do this as well on my 2003 E500.
My car has a Euro Comand installed with the green fakra connector, NTG 1.0 and Video in Motion enabled.
Can I just purchase a camera and VGA adapter and connect it to the fakra and have it work through my Comand screen?

I bought this backup camera (click here) for my W203 and my W211. It's been at least a couple of years and they are working great with no issues. Clear images and distance lines.

I have aftermarket head units but should wire up fine to any head unit that can accommodate a backup camera.

Do you mind taking a picture of what the plate lights look like at night with that equipped?

My concern is one side looking dim or not even.. I had aftermarket LED fixtures in. Not bulbs but actual fixtures with LEDS built in..

Also how does this hook into factory unit?

There are several threads on backup cameras. This one should help honestly as it helped me when I did a backup camera on our 2009 e350.
You have to have the NTG 2.5. head unit. You can purchase a Video in Motion (VIM) box on ebay that will unlock the VIM feature and also backup camera feature if you do not have STAR. Note that STAR will only unlock the backup camera on the head unit for it to appear as an option when you reverse. IE: Reverse Backup Camera.
If you want the VIM feature you still have to get the aftermarket control box.

TLDR:
You need this for VIM:

I installed it today and it did work fine like oem camera.
the device unlocked reverse camera feature in the command by just sticking it to the OBD connector of the car for 2 seconds like magic.
I did not use the filter from the parts i listed above because i checked my reverse light power and it was 12V, if it less than that then you will need filter.

the link is working, anyway you can copy below and search it in google and the website will be shown

Kufatec 38463 Encoder Interface for TV / UMI / rear view camera for Mercedes NTG2.5 maxxcount

Star should work but no dealer or workshop agreed to do it for me beside will be expensive

make sure your command is ntg 2.5 otherwise you have to search for another activator for your command

I was able to get the ODB device from Germany. however, directions are in german. Do you remember how to load the software onto the vehicle? by that I mean "teach the car to use backup camera."

EDIT: you just plug it in and turn car off and wait a minute

I think I have everything I need: the camera and cable, and adapter for back of radio. Now have to figure out how to remove the radio

Researched a bit more and it looks like it is ready to be hooked up. To follow up, the spare 2 red wires that dangle should not need to be used. The only 2 wires that really need o be hooked up are + and - (on the left bottom of picture) and I will use the 12V cigarette wire for that. Will do install soon.
