Wagon hatchback question

The hatch on the wagon needs a little help when opening. Is there an adjustment for this or is this an indication that the motor is getting tired. The hatch is rarely used and the car only has 62k miles on it after 9.5 years. Thanks.

Car free at the moment
Most likely the gas charged struts which hold the hatch open are getting weak after ~10 years. Does it also slam shut with a bit too much force? Is it weaker on the cold days than hot days? The remedy is to replace with fresh struts. The parts are not expensive, but on cars with the power hatch it is a labor intensive job - the entire headliner need be dropped. I was quoted about $1K a few years back at my local MB dealer.

Edit: This is a typical repair around 10 years of age on an MB wagon. It used to be easier & hence cheaper back before power liftgates, though.

The only thing is that on a 2008 wagon, there are no struts, so the motor has to be that much stronger.

How old is the main battery? is it the right type (AGM) and size? Is you alternator charging properly? Is the voltage regulator worn out in the alternator. It can be replaced separately for a lot less than replacing the alternator.

What is the voltage reading on the dash board display when the engine is off after sitting overnight? What is it when the engine is running?
