Rear Grinding Sound

Hi folks, hope you're all well!

I've recently got my hands on a low mileage E320. It's my first MB and I have to say I'm very happy with it!

However (oh no), for the last couple of days I have heard a grinding sound. It seems to be coming from the rear right.

It only happens when I pull away, fairly hard, from still, and goes away again once I'm over 10mhp or so.

Pull away gently, no sound. Cruising down main roads, no sound. Give it some welly from the lights, grinding sound.

I haven't had a chance to have a good look under it yet. ( gets dark so early this time of year) Hopefully at the weekend I can. Does anyone have any ideas?

I would start by checking the right side drive shaft, wheel bearings & brake rotor/caliper & pads first.

Hello All,

Sorry for the late bump, but to conclude the thread, problem found and fixed.

Part of the exhaust heat shield had drooped down and was rubbing.

Love it when a problem is cheap and easy to fix! Thanks for the follow-through.

Yes indeed! As soon as grinding came from it under acceleration my mind raced to failing gearbox, diff, joints etc.

But hey, the mechanic fixed it same day, and only charged me 15GBP. It's not often you smile when paying the mechanics bill!

Hopefully those problems are long away (or never), I waiting a while to find a good condition low mileage one!
