Question on gas guage

Hi, I know this may sound like a stupid question, but where exactly is empty on the digital guage. In my old E you knew how many gallons were left on one of the displays, so you always knew exactly how much gas you had, and you knew you were in trouble when the gas needle was pointing to the left of the E.

Now with the digital guage the idiot light comes on when 3 bars are left, but is there a 4th bar, is there a no bar state, where only white is showing? Or are you in trouble once the last bar is burned up.

The maximum I've dared to go with low gas was down to 1 bar, and then the car drank up 18.5 gallons. What is the most you've filled up?

I can't answer your question directly, but I can mention an alternative to figuring out how close you are to empty. If you set the instrument panel to showing mileage on the current trip and average mph, etc., it also shows miles per gallon. If you click the up arrow (I believe it is), it will show you the range you have remaining. If you divide the range by the miles per gallon, you will have a good read on the actual gallons left.

Once the miles remaining until empty gets to zero and stays at zero, you do not have more than about 20 miles until empty. I learned this the hard way.

Judging by jbec.keane's experience, the fact he has an E320, and assuming he was probably on a highway when he reached fuel exhaustion, it appears there is approx 0.9 gallon of usable fuel remaining once the range to empty reaches 0, at least for his car. No idea how much this would vary from car to car, though. Care to experiment? This could also be a good test of Tele-aid.

And to make it REALLY like a Seinfeld episode- The "Drive till Empty" test should be run with your girlfriend or close wacky friend in attendance, and in dire need of a bathroom.
