W211 Engine Petrol Motor Sounding like a Diesel Motor
I am new to this forum but have owned various MBs over time. I recently got an E-Class W211 2005 from a friend of mine who had the engine redone. The car drove well for a few weeks and then started making a rattling noise like a Diesel engine. The first mechanic I went to said the E-gear had a problem, had that changed and the solution lasted a day. Took it to the MB dealership and they said the same gear had a pin that fell out, had them change it and the sound did not go away. Another mechanic said it was the oil guide drill which was broken, he opened the tapes, sure enough the guide drill had pieces that had fallen out. That was replaced, new sprockets, timing chain and belt done at that same time.
I got the car back and it sounded good only for a day then it started again. Basically when you start the engine the very first time the car idles like normal, when I drive and then stop at maybe a traffic light, the sound starts and gradually increases to a loud rattling.
I have thought of lifters but I am not sure. When the car is rattling and I open the hood, it sounds like something is knocking on something just under the tapet. Has anyone every experienced this and maybe have a solution? I am in Cape Town, South Africa. Thank you for your help.
