CDI fuel tank filling problems

The fuel tank for the 05 CDI has the unleaded filler restricter and flapper that prevents you from filling with most diesel nozzles. The diesel nozzles I have had experience with are larger than the unleaded nozzles, yet the smallest (not the truck ones) nozzles still do not fit the tank. Has anyone else found this a problem. I have found only one station that actually fits perfect. The local dealer is checking out the problem for me but have not heard back for over a week now.

I assume you are in the U.S. If so, this only proves that if you buy an early model you are going to get what we used to call Leading Edge Wind Burn at IBM. In other words, even though versions of the CDI have been available in Europe since 2000 and even though the E211 has been sold in the U.S. since late 2002, you never know what you will run into when you buy a car that's configured for the U.S. market for the first time.

It looks like Mercedes have put a U.S. gasoline fuel tank into the CDI.

There's something to be said for buying models that have been around for a while.

viesel - i don't know where you are located, but here in california all of the diesel nozzles fit into regular unleaded cars. the only difference is the green color of most nozzles. the reason i know this is because i've known a coworker and a friend's girlfriend put in the diesel into unleaded cars because they didn't know any better.

It's been three years since I sold my Mercedes diesel but at that time, the nozzles for diesels were larger than for unleaded gasoline and I'm talking about regular gas stations not those that sell fuel to truckers.

Im in Tampa Florida and I have been pumping diesel into my cars for a lot of years, but I have noticed that the small auto diesel nozzles (not the truck stop nozzles) are smaller but they are still slightly larger that the unleaded ones to prevent gassers from filling accidently with diesel because they just want fit. I think that the newest gas stations are now installing the unleaded nozzles with the diesel pumps for autos but the older stations seem to have the slightly larger ones. If the dealer cant fix it, I have a really nice sledge hammer with a nice large brass rod that hasnt been used in a long time.

no problem with my 2005 cdi

i just returned from filling up. No problem with size of the nozzle. I was, however, the only pump without a pay-at-the-pump option. I really hate going in to pay.

Now that there are more '05 CDIs on the road, has any one else experienced problems? I noticed that here in Oregon, the green nozzles ARE larger than unleaded nozzles. My CDI is arriving in Oct. Hopefully I don't have any issues with filling it.

I'm picking up my CDI at the factory on 8/30, and driving it around Germany for two weeks. It then takes about 6 weeks to ship to the West Coast. I expect I won't have it home until the end of Oct/early Nov.

It is scheduled to be built 3rd week of July, but MBUSA configured it incorrectly. They dropped my ventilated and dynamic seats from the order. Hopefully I can still get it changed`

CDI fuel tank filling problems

05 CDI's fuel tank filler is much smaller than my 85's , but so far I did not have any problems filling it at the Auto Diesel marked pumps. As for th Dynamic Seats if you can get it go for it is a worthwhile option.

Regards,

Fuel Filler size...

I just purchased an '07 E320 (Bluetec) and I've run into the same issue as the original post.

E.G.: I went to purchase Diesel at a filling station, and the nozzle from the Diesel Pump would not fit into my Benz's tank and flapper.

Does anyone make a retrofit with a larger opening?

This is silly!

My 1997 VW Passat TDI (Diesel) had a larger opening allowing me to fuel-up anywhere the price was good...

tnx,

Chessie

You went to a pump that is meant for 18 wheelers. The larger nozzle has nothing to do with preventing absent minded people from using the wrong fuel, the larger allows for a much faster rate of flow which helps expedite the loading of 100s of gallons into 18 wheelers. Many stations will have both if they see a fair amount of truck traffic. They should have a car only pump that is labeled as such.

This is simply a user education issue.

Helpful reply...

And so by:

"This is simply a user education issue."

You mean that I'm supposed to learn that I can't fill up my diesel Mercedes in the same places that I *could* fill up my diesel VW, well then I have been educated on that issue.

I was hoping for a little more helpful reply, such as "there is a kit you can purchase where you can swap out the restrictor plate that limits the size of the nozzle with a large opening one.... and here is where you can purchase it..."

Or perhaps: "MB learned that this was a mistake, and in the 2008 and newer models, the opening is larger, sorry for your 2007 restrictions."

But the lesson on large nozzles and 18 wheeler's was helpful. (Hopefully this is perceived as humorous sarcasm, not a slap in the face...)

No, mercedes did not change the size on any year. You're simply filling up with 18 wheeler sized nozzles. If your VW had a huge opening to accept those, so be it, but in every instance I've ever encountered these huge nozzles, I've been at a truck stop and I simply moved to the next pump over which was meant for CARS and everything fit fine.
