The re-settable feature of the odometer allows you to have two memory cycles, one of which re-sets automatically when you shut off the car and it sits idle for more than (I Believe) 4 hrs. The other read-out- the one that do not clear unless you hit the reset knob- I have left mine as it was on delivery and I have a cumulative tracking of fuel economy and average speed and operating hours-

A long trip which may cover a stay overnight or more than a 4 hour rest.

I've been in the habit (for a long time on several different vechicles) of resetting the trip odometer every time I fill up, and then using it as a check on the fuel gauge.
